100 Most Common Spanish Verbs (List with Conjugation)

These are the 100 most common Spanish verbs, ranked by how often they are used. The order comes from Spanish frequency dictionaries, which are built from large collections of written and spoken texts. The end of the list adds everyday verbs such as comer, dormir and jugar: they rank a little lower in those texts, but you need them from day one.

Each verb comes with its meaning and three key forms: the yo form in the present tense (Presente), the yo form in the preterite (Pretérito Indefinido) and the past participle (Participio). These three forms show at a glance whether a verb is regular. Tap any verb to open its full conjugation table in every tense.

  • Filters show only the irregular verbs or one verb group: -ar, -er, -ir.
  • Hide translations turns the list into flashcards: recall the meaning, then tap to check yourself.

How to learn these 100 verbs

  1. Start with the top 10. Ser, estar, haber, tener, hacer, poder, decir, ir, ver, dar appear in almost every conversation. With them you can already build simple sentences: Tengo que ir (I have to go), ¿Puedes hacerlo? (Can you do it?).
  2. Learn 10 verbs a day. Turn on Hide translations, go through one block from top to bottom and come back to the ones you missed. Bookmark this page: you will cover the whole list in 10 days.
  3. Learn each verb with its yo form. The irregularity almost always shows up there: tener → tengo, tuve. Once you know the three forms in the table, the other tenses come much more easily.
  4. Learn short phrases, not single words: hacer la compra (to do the grocery shopping), tomar un café (to have a coffee), dar las gracias (to say thank you).

Irregular verbs on the list: what to watch for

Almost half of the verbs on this list are irregular, but their irregularities follow patterns. A few groups cover most of them:

Pattern Example Verbs on the list
-go in the yo formtengo, hago, pongotener, hacer, poner, salir, venir, decir, traer, caer, oír, suponer, mantener
-zco in the yo formconozco, parezcoconocer, parecer, aparecer, producir, reconocer, nacer
e → iepienso, quieroquerer, pensar, empezar, comenzar, entender, perder, sentir, convertir
o → ue (u → ue)puedo, vuelvo, juegopoder, encontrar, volver, contar, recordar, dormir, morir, jugar
e → ipido, sigopedir, seguir, servir, conseguir
Special preterite stemtuve, hice, dijeestar, haber, tener, hacer, poder, decir, poner, venir, querer, saber, traer, producir, mantener, suponer
Irregular past participlehecho, dicho, vistohacer, decir, ver, poner, escribir, abrir, volver, morir, suponer

Ser and ir are a case of their own: they share the same preterite forms (fui, fuiste, fue), and the context tells you which verb is meant.

Don't confuse irregular verbs with spelling changes. In llegué, busqué, empecé only one letter changes to keep the sound before e: g → gu, c → qu, z → c. These verbs are conjugated like regular ones.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Spanish verbs?

The top 10 by frequency are ser, estar, haber, tener, hacer, poder, decir, ir, ver and dar. They show up in almost every conversation, and all of them are irregular.

How many Spanish verbs do I need to know?

The first 100 are enough to get started: they account for most of the verbs used in everyday speech. After that, it is easier to grow your vocabulary by topic: work, travel, food.

How many verbs on this list are irregular?

48 out of 100, and two of them, leer and creer, change only their spelling (leyó, creyó). The irregularities repeat in groups: -go in the yo form (tengo, hago), stem vowel changes (quiero, puedo, pido) and special preterite stems (tuve, hice, dije). The Irregular filter shows only these verbs.

What is the difference between regular and irregular Spanish verbs?

Regular verbs follow the standard endings of their group, -ar, -er or -ir: hablar → hablo, hablé, hablado. Irregular verbs change their stem or ending in at least one tense: tener → tengo, tuve; hacer → hago, hice, hecho.
